It covers various areas like climate control, energy sources, pollution and corporate social responsibility. As an environmental attorney, most opportunities are in the business area of advising large corporations and businesses on their risk, liability, regulatory concerns, damage limitation, and litigation defense. Outside of the corporate world, there are few (but popular) opportunities in the non-governmental organization (NGO) area, such as Friends of the Earth. Alternatively, there are further opportunities both in government (for example, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs known as DEFRA), and in regulatory bodies such as environment agencies at)nd government localities. Depending on your area, clients can range from large corporate entities to individuals, charities to governments, and the legal areas involved can be just as varied. They can include a variety of areas such as corporate, criminal, finance and real estate, so check out those areas of practice as well. EU law has a huge impact in this area, with many directives emanating from Brussels. What does an environmental lawyer do? When working for corporate clients, environmental attorneys advise on the potential environmental consequences of pursuing certain corporate actions. These consequences may include, for example, impacts to health and safety or increased pollution and carbon emissions. Litigation cases can be very high profile, involve large sums of money and can have devastating consequences for a client, as cases can be tried through both criminal and civil courts. Lawyers working for the government advise and draft laws and cases. Working with local government sees lawyers acting for a specific client in an advisory, regulatory and litigation capacity. Those who work for environmental agencies in the regulatory field are responsible for legislation, regulation and adjudication. What skills are required?
