Kanal What is human rights law? Human anada rights are the rights and liberties of an individual, which form the basis of the relationship between the government and the individual. Human rights, EU and public law were introduced into English law under the man Rights Act 1998. Any breach of the European Convention on Human Rights can be dealt with in UK courts, although cases can still be taken to Strasbourg in France as a last resort. Types of Human Rights Law There are three general types of legal fields related to human rights: civil-political, socio-economic and collective development. The first two are individual persons against their governments and standards recognized in international law. What does a human rights lawyer do? The work of a human rights lawyer can be incredibly varied, as it revolves around a wide range of rights enshrined in law. For example, rights like "right to personal liberty life", "freedom of thought, conscience as religion", "freedom of expression", "peaceful enjoyment of your property" and "right to education". Some of these rights (for example, not to be tortured) cannot be limited by a court: other rights are limited, to avoid unfairly harming another person's rights. For example, the right to privacy and the right to freedom of expression are not always compatible. The work of human rights lawyers therefore covers a wide range of law, from human rights and civil liberties to European law, public law, data protection and privacy, immigration, civil and criminal law. The work may be very high-profile, where individuals assume a position of authority (for example, through action against the police or a mistrial); or governments and other bodies (bringing cases to judicial review). What skills do human rights lawyers need? Oratory: Effective communication with clients, interested parties and courts. Dedication: Becoming a human rights lawyer takes years of study and experience. Resilience: You may face mentally exhausting cases. Knowing how to build your energy will help you perform better. Persuasiveness: To win the case you must be persuasive. How to enter human rights law? To work as a solicitor, you can take the Bar Qualifying Examination (SQE) or, if you qualify, you can study the Legal Practice Course (LPC). If you qualify through the SQE, you will need to complete two years of Qualifying Work Experience (QWE). To prepare for the SQE, we recommend studying one of our SQE courses, which are designed to give you the knowledge and skills for a successful career as a lawyer. If you are eligible to study the LPC you will need to secure a two-year training contract with a law firm. To find out which path is right for you, visit our Becoming a Lawyer page. Once you have completed your two-year training contract or QWE, you can apply to the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) to be admitted as a solicitor. To become a barrister, you must complete a law degree before completing the Bar Practice Course (BPC) or a conversion course if you are not a law graduate. You must therefore protect the student. You can also study a Master of Law (LLM) in International Human Rights to give you the knowledge and skills to enter the sector. Apart from educational qualifications, it takes a certain type of person to become a human rights lawyer. Since the areas of law involved are varied and subject to rapid change, a genuine interest in human rights and up-to-dateness is a prerequisite. Because the law is constantly evolving and sometimes unclear or untested, you must have the ability and confidence to make sound judgments based on prior experience. Workloads tend to be large, so you need good time management skills and the ability to process large amounts of data. The work can be extremely rewarding, but potentially very stressful, so an interest in people and good communication skills along with the ability to keep things in perspective are helpful.
